Comparing with glass beer bottles, PET plastic bottles have outstanding advantages, such as non-explosive, light in weight (only around 5% in weight of the glass bottles), cheaper in transportation, easy for washing and easier recyclable.
In last 1990s, PET plastic bottles in beer industry had grown rapidly. In 1996, the first PET plastic bottled beer came into market in Australia, and some famous companies followed the way in the following years, such as Carlsberg, then PET plastic bottles got more popular in EU and American area.
Then, in some countries as mentioned above, the PET plastic beer bottles grown at around 30% in the market every year. And it is already around 40% PET plastic bottled beer in South Korea now. So, logically speaking, the PET beer bottles should have been more popular than glass bottles.
But now, this idea seams to be paused. In August 2011, an act issued in Russia which has set that the glass bottled beer should be prohibited since Jan 1st 2013. in nowadays, there are already around 48% of the beers bottles in Russia are made of PET, while 17% for glass bottles, 17% for metal cans. Undoubtedly, PET has becoming the main packing material for beer bottles in Russia
And, why it can not get so popular in some other countries like Africa area and Asian Area?
The most important reason t is the problem of the cost of PET plastic. For now, in Africa and Asian area, it is very easy to control and cost of industrial land, water and power system, the cost is much lower than the developed countries. While the PET is made from oil, whose price is strictly following the international oil price, and it become out of control sometimes. If we change the beer bottles into PET bottles, then the price of each bottle of beer may rise around USD 0.09. and this USD 0.09 is very critical in the bloody bottled beer market, then almost no factory is trying to take that rick.
The promotion of the PET bottles in beer market needs the effort from the giant companies in the word like Pepsi and COCO-COLA, as they changed the glass bottled drinks into PET bottled drinks before. We also believe that there will be some other giant companies in the world standout and put their effort in pushing the plastic beer bottles, just like what Pepsi and COCO-COLA have done before. They can change a life habit and save cost at the same time.
